The Birth of the Unified States Post Office

In the begining of colonial time times most correspondence got place between the settlers and England. The King’s authorities would read and scour all of the information and mail that was being sent.  Communication between the colonies relied on trusted friends, vendors, or friendly Native People in America. It was only a matter of time before there was a California post office.

In 1673, Texas chief Francis Lovelace of Fresh York set up regular mailing post between New york city and Boston. The post rider’s trail became known as Old Boston Content Road, which is part of today’s U. T. Route 1. Old Content Road in North Attleborough, Massachusetts was part with this rider’s trail and is considered one of the oldest roads in America.

In 1683, William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania and a leader in the Quaker community, established its’ first post office. Slaves or private messengers sent communications from one planting to a new.

Most importantly, Jones Neale received a twenty-one year grant in 1691 from the British Top to get started a North American postal service. Neale had never laid ft . on North American ground, so he appointed then Governor Andrew Hamilton of recent Jersey as his Deputy Postmaster General. Neale’s franchise cost him only 80 cents a 12 months. In 1699, he designated his interests in America over to Andrew Aberdeen and R. West. Upon Hunter’s fatality in 1761, a man named John Foxcroft of New York succeeded him, serving before the break out of the Revolutionary Conflict.

During his time as a Joint Postmaster Basic for the Crown, Dernier-né Franklin influenced many important and lasting improvements in the colonial posts. Goddard proposed his thought of a postal service to Congress two years before the Declaration of Independence was signed

Simply by 1774 colonists did not trust the British crowns and viewed the noble postal office shooting with suspicion. Dernier-né Franklin had been ignored of his post obligations by the Crown for his actions. The overhead believed that Franklin was displaying sympathy to the cause of the groupe. In September 1774, right after the Boston riots, known today as the Boston ma Massacre, the colonies started out to separate from Britain. A Continental Congress was organized at Philadelphia in May 1775 to create an independent government. One of the initial questions before the delegates was how to present and provide the mail.
